1. ETERNITY RING

types of eternity rings

An eternity ring is a band of precious metal set with a continuous line of identically cut diamonds.  They are also known as infinity rings. The concept is that the diamonds circling the entire band symbolizes never-ending love.

The idea behind a ring representing eternal love has been around for hundreds if not thousands of years. There are accounts of this kind of ring as far back as Ancient Egyptian times.

That said, the diamond eternity ring that we all know and love today is a modern take on an “eternity ring”.  It was created by De Beers in the 1960s.

As soon as the diamond eternity ring hit the scene, it was an instant classic. It has been the most popular ring for anniversaries ever since.

Although an eternity ring is great for anniversaries, it is not the only occasion to buy an eternity ring. Because of the ring’s incredible desirability, many single women buy eternity rings for themselves. Another common trend we see is father’s buying their daughters eternity rings.

Men should all be aware, every woman loves an eternity ring.

Why?

Well, they are absolutely breathtaking!

Eternity Ring Designs

All eternity rings feature a perfect line of diamonds that circle the entire top side of the band. And all eternity rings are made from precious metals – yellow gold, white gold, and rose gold.

With that, the design can vary in setting and diamond shape (and even diamond color!).

The four typical eternity ring settings are claw, channel, pavé, and cut down. Our personal favorite is pave and claw as they allow the diamonds to be most visible. These two types of settings are best for eternity rings with larger diamonds.

As for the diamonds, eternity rings come in various sizes. Some are thin while others have considerably large identically cut diamonds, as you can see in the pics.

The most common diamond shapes for eternity rings are round brilliant, cushion cut, radiant cut, baguette cut, emerald cut, and Asscher cut diamonds, as these shapes easily fit side by side each other to create an endless loop.

Yellow diamond eternity rings have become highly sought after the past few years. Everyone wants yellow diamonds these days!

Overall, with the various settings and diamond shapes, there are so many ways to create a unique diamond eternity ring that matches your personal taste.

How to wear eternity rings?

types of fashion rings

Eternity rings are very versatile. You can wear them on pretty much any finger. It’s up to the style you want to create.

They are even stackable! This is the highest level of the stacking ring trend.

Another common theme we are seeing in recent years is the eternity ring replacing the traditional wedding band. More and more women (and thus men) are buying eternity rings as their wedding band. In this case, they are stacked below or above an engagement ring.

In any case, the choice of how to wear them is totally up to you. You can’t go wrong either way.

Half-Eternity Rings

There are also half-eternity rings, which are the same exact design as a “full” eternity ring, but instead of the diamonds going all the way around the band, they only cover the face-up side of the band. Some women find the full eternity rings a little uncomfortable so they opt for the half-eternity ring.

That said, it is not really in line with the concept of a loop of diamonds meaning never-ending eternal love. A half-eternity ring is essentially a diamond band.

2. COCKTAIL RINGS

cocktail ring designs

Cocktail rings are big, striking rings made from precious metals and gemstones. The rings are vibrant and designed to attract attention, which makes them perfect for special occasions, like say, a cocktail party!

Cocktail rings are also called “statement rings” as they are very statement making and “bling bling”.

The concept of the cocktail ring came about during the prohibition era. At that time, there were many secret and of course illegal “anti-prohibition” parties across the nation. Typically speaking, these formal parties were for rich folk. Like the extravagant parties themselves, the jewelry women wore were extravagant. The rings were big, bold, brassy and absolutely dramatic. This kind of ring would soon be coined a “cocktail ring”.

During the 40s and 50s, cocktail rings became the norm among the wealthy. All of the most classy, elegant and fashionable women wore them. However, in the 60s, styles became a little more dulled down.

It wasn’t until the 80s, when bold styles, colors, and silhouettes were in, that cocktail rings came back in a big way. Ever since then, cocktail rings have been extremely popular for women who have deep pockets.

Cocktail Ring Designs

The designs of cocktail rings have no rules. They can take on any shape and color, they can have any kind of gemstone cut, they can have any kind of setting for the gemstones, and they can have many small gemstones or one big stone or both. The only commonality of cocktail rings is that it stands out in a way that simply can’t be missed.

Note: One of the most common designs for a cocktail ring is a big precious gemstone at the center (sapphire, emerald or ruby) with many small diamonds surrounding it.

Cocktail rings can be worn on your right hand or left hand and any finger you please. However, they are most often worn on the right hand, for separation from engagement and wedding rings.

While cocktail rings are technically made for special occasions, many women these days were their favorite cocktail rings on an everyday basis. It really depends on the type of cocktail ring and your style. All in all, there are no rules.

3. STACKABLE RINGS

types of stackable rings

Ring stacking, or ring layering, is a very popular trend where you wear multiple rings on one finger.

There are many ways to go about stacking rings and most rings are “stackable”. A common ring stack for married women is an engagement ring, wedding ring and anniversary ring on the left hand’s ring finger.

However, the immense popularity of stacking rings brought about rings that are specifically designed to stack. These are called stackable rings.

Stackable Ring Designs

High-end stackable rings are thin bands with tiny gemstones, similar to a wedding band but usually with more unique shapes and detailing and even colorful gemstones.

Stackable rings may come in sets or you can buy individual stackable rings and mix and match them.

Stackable rings can be worn on any finger and either hand.

The key to stacking rings is to make sure they have matching styles (they by no means have to be identical, they should just work well together), the rings are fairly thin, and they fit together without large gaps in-between.

Mixing metals and gemstone colors is hot. We love a yellow gold, rose gold, and white gold ring stack! So, have fun and get creative with your stackable rings.

4. COLORFUL GEMSTONE RINGS

types of gemstone rings

Gemstone rings cover a pretty broad spectrum of designs. Essentially, any ring with a gemstone is a gemstone ring. So, that means they can have any kind of setting, detailing, and gemstone(s). Of course, precious gemstones – sapphires, rubies, and emeralds – are the zenith of gemstone rings.

Sapphire Rings

right hand rings

Sapphires, which is a type of mineral corundum that come in a variety of colors, have been used in rings for hundreds of years. The blue sapphire, considered the gem of royalty, is obviously the most popular choice. The demand (and thus value) for sapphire rings has consistently increased over the last couple of decades. It seems it’s all about sapphires these days.

If you love a vivid blue colored stone with a super rich history that spans nearly every civilization, a sapphire is the perfect option for you.

Emerald Rings

Emeralds are a type of mineral beryl with a crystalized vivid bluish-green to green color. Like sapphires, emeralds have been an extremely coveted gemstone for as long as people have discovered them. Moreover, the demand for emeralds continues to rise year after year.

For lovers of green, there is no other green gemstone as precious and desirable as the emerald.

Ruby Rings

Rubies are a type of corundum, just like sapphires. Red corundums are called rubies. Every other color corundum, including white, are sapphires. The most desirable rubies have a blood red color. Rubies are arguably the most precious of all gemstones as they are extremely rare. It’s like the king of gemstones.

If you want a ring that will make you feel powerful, vivacious, and full of vitality, a ring with a ruby (or rubies) is the obvious choice.

Semi-Precious Gemstones

Rings with semi precious gemstones are wonderful as well, and they are usually more affordable. The best semi-precious gemstones for rings are opal, rose quartz, garnet, amethyst, onyx, citrine, turquoise, jade, and aquamarine, to name a few. While these semi precious gemstones are not as hard and durable as diamonds, sapphires, rubies, and emeralds, they have enough hardness and toughness for ring use.

Birthstone Rings

Women love birthstone rings because they get a gemstone ring with meaning that relates specifically to them. If you have the wherewithal, a ring with your birthstone is a must-have.

  • January: Garnet
  • February: Amethyst
  • March: Aquamarine
  • April: Diamond
  • May: Emerald
  • June: Pearl
  • July: Ruby
  • August: Peridot
  • September: Sapphire
  • October: Opal
  • November: Citrine
  • December: Blue Topaz

How to Wear Gemstone Rings

A lot of ‘right hand rings’ are gemstone rings. So, they are great for the right hand. The same options for how to wear gemstone rings applies to cocktail rings. The two are very similar, just a gemstone ring can be smaller and more of an everyday piece. That said, they can also be very extravagant and saved for special occasions, just like a cocktail ring (many cocktail rings use colorful gemstones!).

All in all, you can wear a gemstone ring on any finger and either hand. Whatever you prefer. No one will think twice about what finger it’s on, all they will think is “wow, what a stunning ring”. There is something innately raw and powerful about gemstones that attracts us so deeply.

5. DIAMOND RINGS & BANDS

They simply wear diamond rings because they love the look.

With diamond rings, you have tons of style options. From different diamond shapes to different settings, the choices are seemingly endless.

fashion ring styles

When we say fashion rings, we are talking about high-end fashion rings. So, these are rings made from precious metal and gemstones. However, typically speaking, fashion rings are not too expensive because if they use diamonds or other gemstones, they use very small stones. Fashion rings are more for styling purposes and just having a cool ring. It’s not about big, investment-grade gemstones, which is what makes diamond rings, gemstone rings, and cocktail rings so expensive.

With fashion rings, you have tons of options. Let us show you a few examples of some fashion rings.
