Let’s Talk About The Process of Fabrication – Steelmor

In its most basic form, the process of fabrication is turning raw materials into pre-made shapes. But while this may seem like a simple procedure, there are many steps involved in fabrication. Taking the raw materials such as steel or aluminium and creating a product using blueprints, layouts and many specialised techniques can be a long and complicated process.

Process Of Fabrication

There are many different techniques involved when it comes to the process of fabrication.

  • Cutting – a simple and self-explanatory process, cutting is taking raw materials and creating smaller sections. Often done using plasma cutters, laser or water jets.
  • Folding – one of the more complicated processes in fabrication, folding takes the materials and manipulates them to create the angles required for the projects
  • Welding – Welding is the process of joining pieces of material together. There are various ways that welding can be done depending on what is required for the project.
  • Machining – this is the process used to remove pieces of material from a project.
  • Punching or stamping – both very similar in process, punching creates a hole in the material whereas stamping creates a raised area such as a number, shape or letter.
  • Shearing – done on sheet metal, shearing is a process of cutting in long cuts in material
  • Casting – casting is the process of pouring and setting molten metals in a mould to create the desired shapes

Ever Changing

While the above techniques are among the most common processes of fabrication, there are new types of fabrication being developed all the time. With ever-changing technology, the processes are always evolving all the time to improve cost and efficiency across the board, as well as safety and ease of use to companies.
