What Is Piercing Spray (And Where Can I Buy It)? | NeilMed Piercing Aftercare |OEM Jewelry

When it comes to piercing aftercare, you’re going to find a lot of armchair experts who will happily provide tons of advice, much of which is wrong. These bits of advice are often anecdotal (with no proof that they actually work) at best and incredibly harmful at worst.

The truth is that you really only need one product to take care of your piercing: piercing spray. In fact, many other products people may swear by—like tea tree oil or certain ointments—will actually harm your piercing rather than help it. Use of these products often result in prolonged healing times due to uncomfortable complications.

But, what exactly is piercing spray? We’ve put together a quick guide to answer all of your questions.

What is piercing spray?

Piercing spray is a saline solution that’s specifically made for piercings. It comes in sterile containers that can be sprayed from any direction, making it super easy to clean even hard-to-reach piercings.

Simply put, piercing spray is a wound wash saline solution that’s safe to use on healing piercings.

Piercing sprays should only contain two ingredients: salt and water. While it is possible to use saline solution that’s not made specifically for piercings, you need to carefully read the ingredients to be sure that there are no additives. Additional ingredients are unnecessary when it comes to piercing aftercare, and they can irritate the healing piercing.

These sprays are also perfectly mixed so that they properly clean the piercing without irritating it. The mixture must be precise; if you use too much salt, it will dry out the piercing, and if you don’t use enough, it won’t have the proper cleaning effect.

Are all piercing sprays the same?

No, they are not.

Some piercing aftercare sprays include additives that can be harmful to your piercing. Before you choose your piercing spray, you need to make sure that it only contains sodium chloride and pharmaceutical-grade water (which basically means that it’s purified).

If you’ve chosen a reputable piercer, they should point you in the direction of a good piercing spray. However, it’s important that you do your due diligence to ensure that the piercing spray they’ve recommended does not contain any additives.

Can I make my own piercing spray?

You can, but you need to make sure that you’re precise.

As mentioned above, the salt and water mixture must be the perfect balance in order to work properly. You also need to ensure that you use the correct ingredients and that it’s stored in a clean environment.

While it is possible to mix your own, piercing sprays aren’t that expensive. The money you’ll save will be negligible, especially when you compare it to the time it takes to mix your own solution and the risk that you’ll mix it incorrectly.

Can I use piercing sprays on other small wounds?

Absolutely.

Piercing sprays are essentially wound wash that’s safe to use on piercings. (It’s why NeilMed’s Piercing Aftercare Solution is also called Wound Wash.) If you have a minor cut or scrape, it’s perfectly fine to use our piercing spray on it to clean it out.

If you have extra piercing spray after your piercing has healed, you can use it to safely clean any small injury.

However, this spray is only meant for small scrapes and scratches. If your wound is large, it will likely require more attention.

Where can I buy piercing spray?

When you get pierced, your piercer will have piercing spray available at their studio for you to purchase. Just make sure that it doesn’t contain any additives.

You can also purchase piercing spray online. We offer a few different options including a fine mist spray, a full stream spray, and travel sizes for both. Talk to your piercer about which option is best for you and your piercing.

We ship all over the world, so no matter where you are, you can have piercing spray delivered to you in a timely manner.

Piercing spray might seem simple, but it’s incredibly important when it comes to the health of your piercing. Do yourself a favor and opt for the best option for your piercing.
