Fortunately, that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the stunning effects of a perfect pair of earrings. Far from it. Explore your options with our list of 7 types of earrings for unpierced ears:
1. Hinge Clip-On Earrings
Introduced in the mid-1930s, the easy-to-operate clip-on earring consists of a simple hinged clip that opens and closes to fasten to the earlobe. The style is bellowed for its convenience and the lack of adjustment required when wearing. This style is ideal for light to medium-weight earrings; however, some types feature friction grooves that make them suitable for slightly larger and heavier styles.
2. Paddle Back Clip-On Earrings
The 1950s saw a flurry of patent applications for clip-on earring variations. One such design rose to prominence throughout the decade and has remained the pinnacle image most people imagine when they think of a clip-on earring. Like the hinge clip-on earring, the enduring style consists of a paddle clip with a wide fastening and an adjustable tension bar running down the center that can be bent to tighten or loosen the clip to your liking.
3. Screw-Back Earrings
The first clip-on earrings created, screw backs were used by Victorian ladies for whom it was considered a disgrace to poke holes in oneself. This earring consists of a simple screw that presses against the earlobe to keep the earring in place. It’s great for a fully customizable fit, but can be somewhat challenging to adjust, and are often markers of a vintage piece.
4. Screw-Hinge Clip-On Earrings
In 1962, a best-of-both-worlds solution was made combining the best of screw-back and hinge-clip earrings: the screw-hinge clip-on earring. The style combines a convenient hinge clip with an adjustable screw to get that full-customizable fit. The somewhat bulky back is best for particularly large and heavy earring styles, or if your earlobes tend to swell throughout the day and require frequent adjustments.
5. Mini-Clip Earrings
For anyone who loves a daintier style, there is a clip-on earring style for you too! The style consists of a simple wedged-shaped hinge bar couples with a tension bar. This design is great for small, lightweight earrings or individuals with small earlobes.
6. Sliding Spring Earrings
Sliding spring earrings are primarily used for lightweight hoops, providing that same seamless look for unpierced ears as a traditional pierced hook style would. You simply slide the spring back away from the “front” and affix it to your ear. In many ways, it’s similar to the hinge back but is more streamlined with a customizable fit.
7. Magnetic Earrings
One of the most modern developments in the clip-on earring space is magnetic earrings. Like most other clip-on styles, they rely on applying pressure to the front and back of one’s earlobe to keep the earring secure. The difference being that this is instead done with a magnet. This style is particularly suitable for smaller studs. Unfortunately, it can be less secure than other clip-on styles as the back can be lost. The magnet also has the potential to interfere with the functionality of specific electronic devices or credit cards if it gets too close.
