That’s why it’s important for all of us to take the few extra minutes it requires to simply sanitize and maintain our jewelry in the first place.

By far the most simple and stress-free way to take care of these things is to relegate them to a professional. You can drop off your items, explain to them the pieces you need to be sanitized and what you would like done to them. Our expert jewelers and professionals will take care of absolutely everything else you could possibly need. We offer additional services and they can even look over the piece to ensure that there is no damage that needs to be repaired. They will test the function of pieces like high-end watches also. If you are short on cash but have plenty of time then getting your jewelry cleaned by a professional may not seem like the absolute best idea. Well good for you there is a simple process you can follow at home to achieve similar results to those of the professional.

There are several common household items that you can use in order to achieve the effect you are looking for.

Items to Clean Jewelry With

  • Ammonia
  • Aluminum Foil
  • Alka Seltzer
  • Baking Soda
  • Toothpaste
  • Vinegar

Each of these is useful for different situations so figure out what you need done to your piece and simply clean with the appropriate item. Let us take a look at a few of the most common household cleaning products and their benefits.

Ammonia

Ammonia is a great all-purpose cleaner that is strong enough to help eliminate many forms of common bacteria from your jewelry. Now be careful because if your items contain any pearl there is a chance it could harm them. It is ideal for restoring the luster in gold and silver pieces, however. Simply combine 2 parts water with 1 part ammonia in a bowl and soak the items. Clean them off after a few minutes with a cloth and they will be good as new.

Aluminum Foil

This a cool trick that utilizes ion exchange to help clean pieces made with precious metals. You can even use it on silverware too. Line the interior of a bowl with aluminum foil and pour in some bleach-free laundry detergent. Soak your pieces in it for a few minutes then take them out and wash them off.

Alka Seltzer

This is great for when your jewelry has lost its luster and is starting to look duller than you would like. Prepare a glass of water with some Alka Seltzer tablets and drop your pieces in for a few minutes. Take them out and admire the restored beauty.

Baking Soda

This is great for tarnished silver and some types of gold jewelry or even a Rolex Watch. Make a paste that is simply 1/2 cup of baking soda and 4 tablespoons of water. Using a rag vigorously scrub the pieces. This will help to remove any built-up tarnish or undesirable elements that have become encrusted on the pieces.

Toothpaste

Finally, we get to the classic toothpaste. This is super simple. All you do is take a toothbrush, preferably one that you don’t use for your teeth, then apply a small amount of toothpaste and scrub your jewelry until it looks like it just came out of the box again. This is especially useful for diamond jewelry which can be difficult to clean using other methods effectively. It can help to entirely restore the original brilliance of the gem if applied properly. Just don’t make the mistake and use the toothbrush for yourself after you have completed the job.
